I think a lot of people will lose interest if the price isn't pretty close to the U.S. price (myself included).

The AU$ is stronger than the US$ and these are coming from a US company so that should help keep the cost down.

IF the Neptune Systems products are manufactured in Asia the smart thing to do would be for Neptune Systems to have their manufacturer ship directly to Aus rather than sending them half way round the world to the US only to send them back. This could result in the added benefit of freight costs that are actually lower than what it costs to get them to America.

I should point out that the comment about manfactiring in Asia is an assumption on my part. I've based this on the simple fact that it is often the most cost effective place to manufacture just about anything as long as you're producing large enoght quatities to offset the set up and transport related costs. Whats more, the old stereotype that "anything made in asia is cheap and nasty" simply isn't trtue any more so Neptune Systems could still be turning out a quality product from China or just about anywhere else in Asia.

The problem is their is often an extra layer, we see the same problem in a lot of goods (cameras and lenses for example)

i.e.

In the US you can buy direct off Neptune from their website or from large online resellers that are most likely buying their stock from Neptune..

Here the stock is obviously originally coming from Neptune regardless of physically manufacturing location, it then goes to the distributor here (extra layer) and then to a reseller here.. So no matter what you very rarely get a similar price, both due to us being a smaller market but also due to the extra layer making a profit in the middle...

I am curious to wait and see the price here but I will be more than shocked if it is much less than double the US price (though despite my shock I would be ordering one immediately)..

Aquatronica is a good example, The full Aquatronica deluxe kit in the US is US$599 ($699 with ethernet module) the comparable kit here is more like AUD$1,290

I do hope I am proved wrong here..

Well I stand corrected and VERY surprised, it seems that, unlike Aquatronica (and plenty of other things), the Neptune pricing in Australia will be very competitive.. (sub $700)

point taken regading the extra layers effecting the price and I hadn't entirely taken this into consideration. I'm no expert on import/export matters.

I know you can by them direct in the US, in fact I found out that Neptune Systems were looking at the possiblity of bring APEX to Australia becuase I wanted to by direct but when I enqureid they told me they don't ship internationally, but they told me they were in duscussions with a potential distributer in Australia for a 240v unit they had on the drawing board.

However regardless of these additional layers, APEX pricing will still need to be kept down due to the simple fact that they need to be able to compete with other players in the market like GHL. If you want to break into a new market and be competitive, simply matching those that have already established themselves in the market generally won't cut it because they have the undeniable advantage of a history within the local market. The only real exception to this is if you have a very strong USP which truely sets the product, brand or company aprt from the competition and which is not price dependent.

For the APEX, I think pricing will actually be particularly significant because as I see it their USP is heavily price dependent. The Neptune Systems website quite clearly promes APEX as "afordable quality controller". To live up to a USP like this they need to prove the affordabilty in the local market.

Anyway, all things considered, sub $700 may achieve that for them.

Contacted a retailer in the aquadirect list and was told $600 to $650 (estimated), so pretty safe to say sub $700...

It is still a jump from $499 but once you add GST you get $550, so $50 to $100 extra isn't a big deal at all, and a nice surprise..

Now just a question of availability..

One of the hardest controllers to go from 110 to 240v (mod wise) So I can see why it's taking so long. Shame on the other USA control manufacturer....

I meant that the controller isn't the easiest controller on the market to mod to 240v . I know it had been done before and it is currently shipping to Euro land. Supply and demand; the price can't be to bad as stock is being sold as it hits the selves.

That being said I have also seen te complaints and the resulting refunds / reimbursement that they are offering now

I'm guessing it might have something to do with the Australian electrical legislation and not being up to par? Sure it comes in 240v already, but does it meet standards? I really hope so!!!
