Calcium chloride is most commonly used as a calcium additive and will be the major component of commercial powder and liquid products sold for solely increasing calcium levels.

Long term, it should not be dosed by itself. It needs to be added with an alkalinity buffer, otherwise the relative concentrations of calcium and alkalinity in the water will become unbalanced. And this will cause a number of issues with the system.

An alternative source of calcium chloride outside of the commercial products available in the hobby, is the product called Damp Rid which is uses as a dehumidifier. It contains almost all calcium chloride and is suitable to be used as a calcium additive source for a reef aquarium.
